What does a Photofacial treat?
Dark Spots on the skin – we all have them. Skin pigmentation can take the form of freckles, age spots or larger patches of discoloration. These spots are caused by the excessive production of melanin in the skin. During your IPL treatment, the light penetrates through the skin and breaks up the pigment in the skin. The pigmented lesions heat up, turn darker, and then flake off in a few days, leaving a beautiful, more even toned complexion.
The IPL Photofacial is a gentle treatment method and is primarily used to encourage the formation of collagen and create a more youthful facial appearance. Collagen plumps up the skin’s structure, so wrinkles and fine lines are smoothed out and are made less noticeable. By promoting the production of collagen, your body is able to create more elasticity. This means that your skin will be tighter, smoother, and more youthful looking. While this treatment does in fact stimulate the production of collagen, you won’t receive the same dramatic facial results as opting for plastic surgery. These kinds of broad- spectrum facials still make it easy for a woman to look younger or enjoy a flawless complexion at a more affordable price. After all, we always joke about needing to find the fountain of youth, what are we going to do when we realize Whitlock Cosmetic Center of Tulsa has known for years and offers these services!
IPL Photofacials are recommended not only for those looking to turn back time. They’re also recommended for acne sufferers. This is because the technology works by producing flashes of light, which then triggers a biochemical response in your skin that will kill the acne causing bacteria inside the pores. The treatment will temporarily reduce facial oil production which will also aid in minimizing the size and visibility of facial prores. This treatment doubles as a treatment for pigmented acne scarring. Making this an all in one treatment! It normally takes a number of sessions to effectively kill acne bacteria, so it may take a few sessions to start seeing satisfactory results.
How many treatments do I need?
The best results are obtained by undergoing a series of IPL Photofacial treatments.
For hyperpigmentation/ anti aging or broken capillaries we recommend a series of 4-6 treatments, with 4 week intervals. With maintenance once every three months, or as desired.
For acne patients, we recommend a series of 6-10 treatments, coming into the office one to two times a week, depending on the severity.
No worries, this will all be determined during the initial consultation, after identifying the skin concern and severity of the treatment area.
Dr. Whitlock and his team working at Whitlock Cosmetic Center have a deep understanding of many different practices and procedures for cosmetic use.

A photofacial, also known as a foto facial, is a cosmetic procedure that treats hyperpigmentation or broken capillaries. The procedure is also used to promote the formation of collagen, or the protein that is found in the skin’s connective tissues that contributes to softness and elasticity. Collagen plumps up the skin’s structure, so wrinkles and fine lines are smoothed out and are made less noticeable. Whether you have many wrinkles or smile line from againg, or you have lost some of your collagen production or your skins elasticity, a photofacial may be right for you.

Photofacials make use of either intense-pulsed light, also referred to as IPL, or an LED or light-emitting diode type of technology. The LED photofacial is a gentle treatment method and is primarily used to encourage the formation of collagen and create a more youthful facial appearance. By promoting the production of collagen, your body is able to create more elastic skin. This means that your skin will most likely be tighter, smoother, more youthful looking. After all, we always joke about needing to find the fountain of youth, what are we going to do when we realize Whitlock Tulsa Cosmetic Surgery Center has known for years and offers these services.
LED photofacials are recommended not only for those looking to turn back time. They’re also recommended for acne sufferers as well as for treating rosacea and large pores. The procedure is as painless as it is relaxing. Now an IPL photofacial is a type of laser treatment and is used to treat more serious skin conditions, such as broken capillaries, spider veins, erythema (redness), and brown spots. However, unlike an LED photofacial, the IPL facial can be rather painful. Tulsa Cosmetic medical research shows that LED photofacials do in fact stimulate the production of collagen. While you won’t receive the same dramatic facial results as opting for plastic surgery, these kinds of broad – spectrum facials still make it easy for a woman to look younger or enjoy a flawless complexion at a more affordable price. Especially with the Whitlock Tulsa Cosmetic Surgery team offering free consultations with Dr. Whitlock himself.
Usually the best results can be obtained by undergoing a series of LED facials every other week. Thereafter, maintenance can be performed every other month. The perfect office space for these treatments is located at the Tulsa Cosmetic Surgery Center. Should you require a more intense photofacial, or IPL treatment, you’ll need to schedule a series of six 30-minute treatment sessions, with each procedure scheduled once every three or four weeks. That is what Dr. Whitlock and his wonderful staff and team at the Tulsa Cosmetic Surgery Center suggest.

Before an IPL treatment, the facial area is cleansed and prepared with a gel solution. This way, we are able to defend against harmful bacteria, or irritation from finding its way into your healthy skin. The gel is replaced with a sunblock after the session. Photofacials—LED and IPL—typically take no longer than a half hour. We do recommend more than one session. You should be scheduling one 30- minute session every week, or every other week. But first, consult with your Dr, and Dr. Whitlock when deciding how many sessions you made need and how often you should be scheduling them. Our team is fully staffed, and have been highly trained for every procedure and surgery the Whitlock Tulsa Cosmetic Surgery team offers.
After the first scheduled treatment and following recovery, you’ll notice that your skin is remarkably smoother, brighter, and tighter. Expect to experience some redness, irritation or swelling immediately after the procedure. Some patients may bruise and blister, too. We do offer some assistance for these side effects. Cold compresses or ice packs are used, if needed, for redness and swelling. However, photofacials usually don’t cause the recipient to experience any downtime or any needed recovery time as patients can usually return to work on the same day they received the treatment. Any discomfort can be easily resolved by taking pain medication and using a topical anesthetic cream. However, you should not be taking any sever pain medication. If you would like to discuss what types of pain reliver, or other sources of pain relief that have been Dr. Whitlock approved, address these concerns in your next meeting.

What to expect during/after IPL Treatment
Before an IPL treatment, the facial area is cleansed and prepared with a topical anesthetic numbing cream for 10-15 minutes. Next, the cream will be removed and the skin will be cleansed again, and prepared with an ultrasonic gel solution. This way, we are able to defend against harmful bacteria, or irritation from finding its way into your healthy skin. The gel is replaced with a sunblock and moisturizer after the treatment is completed. Photofacial treatments typically take no longer than a half hour. Making this an easy lunch-break treatment. Consult with your Medical Aesthetician when deciding how many sessions you may need and how often you should be scheduling them. Our team is fully staffed, and have been highly trained for every procedure and surgery the Whitlock Cosmetic Center team offers.
After your scheduled treatment and following recovery, there may be some mild redness, irritation or swelling that could last 24 to 72 hours. Which, if desired, can easily be covered with makeup. Patients are able to return to work and resume their everyday activities immediately. Some discoloration may be seen if the treatment was indicated for hyperpigmentation (brown spots) and these areas will flake off within one to two weeks, we refer to this as “peppering” and is a desired result. In rare cases, some patients may bruise or blister. We do offer some assistance for those side effects. Cold compresses or ice packs are used, if needed. However, Photofacials usually don’t cause the recipient to experience any downtime or any needed recovery time as patients can return to work on the same day they received their treatment.
